Calvin Drews

I’m Calvin Drews, and I live in northern michigan. I like to make all sorts of things, mostly recycled things. I think there is a lot of value in everyday throw away items, and I enjoy the challenge of bringing it out.

  1. Maybe you know….. I saw you instructables while searching for how to clean the labels off glass. Not easy glass bottle label removal. I mean industrial strength taking the label bits off crushed glass from the recycling center. “Glass cull” is what they call the crushed glass here. I want to use the crushed glass in concrete countertops.
    TIA
    (Thanks In Advance)

    • I would recomend tumbling the glass cull in a cement mixer full of water (overnight). The water will soften the bits of label and the other pieces of glass would scrape it off. If you can get ahold of strong Hydrogen peroxide (12% concentration?) , you’re probably all set (you could probably get it at any place that sells specialty hair products). Lye may actually work too. Experiment!

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer. Paper is typically made of organic materials, so it would pretty much be burned off if you doused it in peroxide.

I’ll let you know if I think of anything else. Remember, though, concentrated peroxide it crazy dangerous stuff. Try the cement mixer method first!

  2. Can you tell me how you “foiled the edges and soldered them” on the slides? What kind of foil? It looks heavy, but then almost looks like leaded glass solder? I’d like to try one. If you have time to answer, thank you in advance.

  3. Hay, I live in Michigan too. I live a town that has a very bad reputation, though :(. It is not Detroit, and I actually believe Detroit is not a bad town.
